What is Mental Health?
Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel and act. It can also determine how we relate to others, handle stress, and make choices.
Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Why is Mental Health important for overall health?
Mental and physical health are equally important componenets of overall health. There is a correlation between mental and physical health problems such as diabetes, heart diseas, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic physical conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.
What Causes Mental Illness?
There is no singular cause for mental illness but several factors that can contribute to the risk of mental illness include but are not limited to:
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), such as trauma or a history of abuse (i.e. child abuse, sexual abuse, witnessing violence, etc.)
- Experiences related to ongoing (chronic) medical conditions such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI), cancer, or diabetes
- Biological factors or chemical imbalances in the brain
- Having feelings of loneliness or isolation
- Use of alcohol or drugs
People can experience different types of mental illnesses or disorders, and they can occur at the same time. It can occur over a short period of time or be episodic, meaning it can come and go with discrete beginnings and ends. Mental illness can also be ongoing or long-lasting.
There are more than 200 types of Mental Illness.
Can Mental Health change overtime?
Mental health can change over time depending on many factors. When a demand is placed on a person that exceeds their resources and coping abilities, their mental health could be impacted. For example, if someone is working long hours, caring for a relative, or experiencing economic hardship, they may experience poor mental health.
How common is Mental Illness?
- Currently mental illness is among the most common health conditions in the U.S.
- More than 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. live with a mental illness.
